On Jan 18 Bitmain released its latest liquid cooling miner, the S19Pro+ Hyd. The mining machine will have a hashrate of 198 TH/s, power efficiency of 27.5 J/TH and will consume 5445W of power.

Erik Thedéen, vice president of the European Securities and Markets Authority, told the Financial Times that bitcoin mining has become a "national problem" in his native Sweden, and he called for a complete ban on POW mining at the EU level. Bitcoin mining firm, Core Scientific, has officially gone public. Ranked first among mining companies in terms of market capitalization. In 2021, the firm reported that it operated a personal mining fleet of approximately 67,000 “state-of-the-act ASICs, reaching a hashrate of up to 6.6 exahashes per second (6.6 EH/s). It reported operating over 80,000 ASICs (6.9 EH/s) for third-party hosting clients. Core Scientific holds over 5,300 Bitcoins on its balance sheet.

The SSU is acting to counter potential threats to Ukraine’s energy security. In an operation in Odesa, the SSU dismantled a clandestine cryptocurrency mining farm that stole vast volumes of electricity from a state-owned critical infrastructure facility.
According to the investigation, the center was organized by two residents of the region. Technological equipment for mining digital currency was installed in a rented warehouse in the city.
The offenders converted part of the proceeds into foreign currency and transferred it abroad via third parties. They kept the rest of the digital money in their own virtual wallets.

Canadian businessman Kevin O’Leary laid out his plans to invest in mining company stocks. In an interview with Anthony Pompliano, Mr. Wonderful shared stories about his recent travels in the Middle East to find ways to invest in Bitcoin (BTC) mining. According to the Shark Tank mogul, investors in the Middle East are looking into “sovereign mining operations.”
O’Leary also predicts that in the next two to three years, sovereign funds may decide to invest in Bitcoin mining. However, the businessman notes that the funds will choose mining businesses that use sustainable energy. Due to environment-related controversies, the eco-friendliness of mining operations is a crucial deciding factor for investors, according to the Canadian entrepreneur.
The businessman also expressed his interest in opening his own mining operations. However, he explained that there are things that he is considering before this happens. He stated that aside from government approvals, the people who live in the community where the mining operations will take place must approve of the business.

A single Ethereum miner was lucky enough to mine a block and earn 170.65 ETH in rewards. The total sum earned was nearly $540,000, a very fortunate win for the miner. The block height is 4020509. The block was mined on Jan 17 and was a huge stroke of luck for the miner. Such instances of mining are extremely rare, though it has happened in the past with bitcoin as well.
As previously reported, on Jan 11, an individual miner with a hashrate of just 126 TH won a block reward of 6.25 BTC, worth over $260,000, for a bitcoin block with a block height of 718,124.

The Bitcoin Mining Council (BMC) announced the findings of its fourth quarter survey on Jan 18. According to the new data, the percentage of global bitcoin mining using renewable energy increased by 1% to 58.5% by the fourth quarter of 2021. The survey focused on three metrics: sustainable power mix, technological efficiency and electricity consumption.

Australian crypto miner Mawson Infrastructure Group said it is operating above 1 exahash per second (EH/s) and is on track to reach 1.1 EH/s by the end of January.
The 1.1 EH/s rate would be about 38% higher than its computing power in November, the company said in a statement.
Mawson’s computing power is about 0.6% of the Bitcoin network’s hashrate of about 162.6 EH/s as of Tuesday, according to data analytics firm Glassnode.
The miner also said it’s producing 5.8 bitcoins per day and is on track to increase its hashrate to 3.35 EH/s by the second quarter and 5 EH/s by the first quarter of next year.

The city court in Syktyvkar, capital of the Russian Komi Republic, has found a local resident who was operating an underground crypto farm guilty of electricity theft.
The man ran the mining facility for at least five years, using 1.3 million kilowatt-hours of unpaid electricity to mint digital currencies, the region’s Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release published on Tuesday. The stolen electricity is worth an estimated 5.7 million Russian rubles (close to $75,000 at the time of writing).
According to the announcement, the man whose identity was not immediately revealed has received a two-year suspended sentence with a probation period of two years for his mining activities between 2015 and 2020 to which he admitted in court.

Australian crypto miner Iris Energy (IREN) said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it has executed a binding connection agreement with utility provider AEP Texas. The company secured a 600-megawatt connection for a new Texas crypto mining facility. The company could add another 7 EH/s in the Texas facility if it secures more mining rigs, bringing its total computing power to 22 EH/s - almost 14% of the bitcoin network's current hashrate.
Iris Energy paid $19 million for the security deposit and the connection fee, the filing said. The data centers in Texas are expected to be energized in the first quarter of 2023, the miner said.
